2024 European Parliament election in Denmark
The 2024 European Parliament election in Denmark is expected to be held in June 2024.[1][2][3] The election will be held along with elections in the rest of the European Union. Under current legislation, Denmark elects all of its members using the D'Hondt method in a single national constituency, with parties being able to form electoral alliances.[4] The election does not take place on the Faroe Islands and in Greenland, which are not part of the European Union. The amount of members to be elected in Denmark has not yet been determined.
On 31 March 2023, Christel Schaldemose was nominated as the main candidate of the Social Democrats.[5] On 15 April 2023, Henrik Dahl announced his candidacy for Liberal Alliance.[6] On 22 April 2023, Morten Løkkegaard was nominated as the main candidate for Venstre.[7]
Parties contesting
To contest the election, a party must either have earned representation at the previous parliamentary election and still be represented in the Folketing, or submit voter signatures from a number of voters equal to at least 2% of the valid votes at the last parliamentary election.[4] As of April 2023, no party has collected enough signatures to be eligible to contest the election,[8] meaning the only parties able to contest the election are those currently represented in the Folketing.
