8:46 (video game)

8:46 is a virtual reality indie simulation video game, released in 2015, based on the September 11 attacks.[1][2] The game takes place in the World Trade Center and during the plane crash into the North Tower.[3] The game is called 8:46 because it is the exact time that American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower.[4][5][6]

Gameplay

The player plays as an unnamed office employee working on the 101st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center during the September 11 terrorist attacks. They do their morning telemarketing work in a room with one other employee. Suddenly, during their work, the building shakes and multiple ceiling tiles fall out of the ceiling. The door is jammed shut, and they and the other employee are trapped within the room.

A man kicks open the door and hands them a Flashlight; and they are also warned about the slowly encroaching fire. They are trapped in the darkness of the floor after every door is tested and is jammed. They are trapped within these confines. They hear as your co-workers make phone calls to their families saying goodbye for the last time as smoke fills the room. The man breaks open a window to the outside. As the player stands there, only between the choices of dying from Smoke inhalation or jumping out of a window and falling to they death are available. If they were to jump out of the window, they would see the destruction of the nearby southern tower as they quickly fall from the tower to the ground, until they screen switches to nothing but black. If they were to stay within the building, they would die for smoke inhalation and fall to the floor, and the screen will fade to nothing but black.

Reception

When the game first released in the year of 2015. Many news publications gave negative viewpoints on the video game; calling it disrespectful, horrifying, distasteful and offensive.[1][4][7]
