Angela Busheska
Angela Busheska (Ангела Бушеска) is a Macedonian climate activist from Skopje, North Macedonia. She is the creator of the app EnRoute, and 2021 winner of the Diana Award and a 2022 Forbes 30 under 30 listee in 2022. As of 2022, she was an engineering student at Lafayette College.
Early life
Busheska grew up in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.[1] She moved there when she was 17 to train for the Mathematical Olympiads. She lived with her aunt, who had cardiovascular disease, which grew worse with the dense air pollution and led to her death.[2][3] Busheska graduated valedictorian from Yahya Kemal College.[4]
She was the second-best national math winner and achieved awards in the Iranian Geometry Olympiad, Mediterranean Olympiad, Mathematics without Borders tournaments, and Macedonian Math Olympiad. In 2019 she was on the team from Macedonia that earned a place in the International Physics Olympiad that was held in Poland, but they were not able to participate due to financial difficulties.[5]
She designed a framework for an Environment-Smart City, for which she was awarded bronze medal at Genius Olympiad; the award included a scholarship to attend school in the United States.[6]
Climate advocacy
In April 2020, Busheska founded EnRoute. EnRoute is a free mobile app that helps users make simple daily choices to reduce their carbon footprint and has already guided thousands of users to reduce more than 100,000 kg of CO2 emissions.[7] In 2021, she was named a We Are Family Foundation Global Teen Leader.[8] In 2021 for her work with EnRoute,[9] she was named a National Geographic Society Young Explorer.[10] Additionally, she was a European Young Innovator by World Summit Awards. She represented North Macedonia at the United Nations Youth4Climate Event.[11] Following the Youth4Climate event in Milan, Busheska returned to Skopje to participate in local climate events.[12]
In 2022, Busheska was a delegate at the One Young World Summit that occurred prior to the COP26 meeting where she was one of the people who worked on the declaration regarding climate change.[13] She won the Emerging Leader Award at the annual Hoff Award Ceremony at Lafayette College. She was an expert consultant through the Youth To The Table partnership between SAP, and We Are Family Foundation.[14]
