Aniebiet Inyang Ntui is a Nigerian environmentalist, diplomat and professor who has served as the Ambassador of the EU's European Climate Pact since December 2022.[1]

She was named by the Web of Science as the "Most Read Researcher in Nigeria" [2] and is the current University Librarian of the University of Calabar. She is the third woman in the 45-year history of the university to hold the position.[3][4]

She virtually chaired panels at the 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Montreal, Canada,[5] the 2022 G20 Bali Summit in Indonesia,[6][7] the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the United Nations Water Summit on Groundwater, held at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris,[8] the 2023 Stockholm Climate Week and the 2023 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.[9]

Education

Aniebiet holds a Bachelor's Degree in Botany (Science Education) from the University of Cross River State, Uyo, a Diploma in Computer Techniques and Applications from the University of Ibadan, a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Calabar, a Master of Library, Archival and Information Science from the University of Ibadan and a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Uyo.[10]

Career

Aniebiet Inyang Ntui is a Professor of Library and Information Science at the University of Calabar, where she has been a Key Member of the University's Management. She has over two decades of experience in program management, financial management, fundraising, international relations and development. In February 2022, she was appointed as the Chief Executive of the University of Calabar Library and became the 5th Substantive University Librarian by the Governing Council of the institution headed by General Martin Luther Agwai.[11][3][4]

During her career, Aniebiet made significant contributions to research and has been recognized for her work. In August 2022, she was named the Most Read Researcher in Nigeria by the Web of Science, with over 500,000 reads on the ResearchGate platform. This recognition highlights her impact and influence in the academic community.[2][12][13] In addition, she received the Leaders in Law’s 2022 UK Global Prize as "the Education Services Expert of the Year in Nigeria."[14]

Professor Ntui is actively involved in various global health, environmental science, and international research initiatives. She is a member of the C7's Global Health Working Group, including the Gender & Health Sub-Working Group, as well as the C7's Climate and Environmental Justice Working Group and P20's Climate and Environment Policy Working Group.[15] She contributed her expertise to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control's Contact Tracing Program during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 and participated in the Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 Contact Tracing Initiative in 2020. She also made significant contributions to the Nigerian Guinea Worm Eradication Programme from 1993 to 1998 and was involved in the Ford Foundation's Initiative for the Visually Handicapped in 1997. Her involvement in these programs demonstrates her commitment to public health and her dedication to making a positive impact on society.[16]

She has conducted significant research in the field of Environmental Noise Pollution. Her two studies, "Environmental Noise Pollution in Nigerian Universities: A Case Study of the University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria" published in the Journal of Nigerian Environmental Society, 2004 and "Noise Sources and Levels at the University of Calabar Library, Calabar, Nigeria" published in the 2009 edition of the African Journal of Library, Archives and Information Science, have served as the basis for the majority of research in noise pollution focused on Nigerian Universities.[17][18]

Professor Aniebiet has also shown strong leadership abilities in the management of Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs). She has developed and chaired NGOs focused on raising funds, financial management, and strategic planning. Through her leadership, she has effectively mobilized resources, implemented financial strategies, and guided organizations towards achieving their objectives. Her expertise in NGO management highlights her commitment to creating a positive impact across different sectors.[19]

In recognition of her expertise and contributions, she has been appointed to various prestigious positions. She is a Stakeholder Member of the Polifonia Project and an Associate Member of the European Union Research Initiative, Europeana. Additionally, she serves as an Overseas Associate Member of the University of the West of Scotland's Centre for African Research on Enterprise and Economic Development and the University of Glasgow's UK-COP 26 Universities Climate Network. As a member of the Civil 7 Engagement Group, Aniebiet Ntui provided valuable recommendations to the 2023 Japanese Presidency of the G7. In this role, she contributed to shaping policy discussions on critical issues at the highest level. Her recommendations emphasized the need for sustainable practices, equitable distribution of resources, and the prioritization of global health initiatives.[26] Ntui's advocacy as a Member of the UNCBD Women's Caucus led to a historic moment during the 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference, where, for the first time in its 30-year history a Rio Convention adopted a stand-alone target on gender equality in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.[5][27]

In December 2022, Aniebiet Ntui was appointed as the Ambassador of the EU's European Climate Pact, which is an initiative supporting the implementation of the European Green Deal. As the EU Ambassador, she actively promotes the European Climate Pact initiative and provides support for the implementation of the European Green Deal. In this role, she encourages stakeholder engagement and represents the European Commission at various events.[1][28][29]

Controversy

In October, an article emerged which claimed that Professor Aniebiet was "set" to endorse the Presidential Candidate of the Nigerian Labor Party, Peter Obi ahead of the 2023 Nigerian Elections. Other articles went further to claim that Aniebiet will be the Minister of Education in the “Obi-Datti administration”.[30][31] Later that week, Professor Aniebiet through a statement released in the City of Calabar said she has no plans to endorse any political party or candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections, she also noted that she has no interest in “any divisive issues or any political appointments” from the Labor Party. Her statement ignited a strong response from supporters of the Youth 'Obidient' movement who took to various social media platforms to criticize her.[32][33][34]
