Career
Asake studied dramatic arts at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. He began releasing music in 2018. His career took off in 2020 with the single "Mr. Money",[9] which was followed by a remix with Zlatan and Peruzzi. In February 2022, fellow Nigerian artist Olamide signed Asake to his YBNL Records imprint.[10] That same month he released his debut extended play, Ololade, which featured his breakthrough song "Omo Ope" featuring Olamide. A second single from the EP, "Sungba", was remixed a month later with a verse from Nigerian superstar Burna Boy. In July 2022, Asake signed a distribution deal with Empire.[11][12]
Asake released his debut studio album Mr. Money with the Vibe on September 8, 2022, seven months after the release of his debut EP. The album was supported by the hit singles "Terminator", "Peace Be Unto You" and the "Sungba" remix with Burna Boy. The album was well-received by fans in his home country of Nigeria, as well as across the world and went on to break several records globally.[13][14] Later that year, Asake began his world tour, selling out 3 dates at the O2 Academy Brixton in London.[15]
In September 2022 Asake announced the Mr. Money with the Vibe tour in UK.[16]
On the final date of Asake's Brixton Academy shows, several people were critically injured during a crowd crush. Two people – 33-year-old concertgoer Rebecca Ikumelo and 23-year-old security guard Gaby Hutchinson – later died of their injuries.[17][18]
On February 2023, Asake won the Male MVP award at the Soundcity MVP Awards which were held at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos.[19]
In April 2023, he appeared on Good Morning America to discuss his music.[20]
Musical style
Asake often uses uptempo Afro and Amapiano-styled production.[21] Some listeners have also described his style as close to Fuji due to his singing in Yoruba and the use of slang in his songs.[22]
Awards and honors
Asake won the Best African Artist of the Year at the 2023 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
