The house was built in the early-17th century, with mid-18th century alterations and 20th-century extensions.[1]

The house once belonged to the English Utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, and it has been suggested that it was here, during a visit from James Mill, that Bentham adopted the democratic ideas that would characterise his later works[2]. J.E. Crimmins, however, has since argued that Bentham had experimented with democratic ideas before the stay: nevertheless, the folklore around the house remains.

Since the 1970s, the businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed has lived at Barrow Green Court.[3][4]
