The manor forms part of the civil parish of Watton. A portion of the Minster Way crosses through the center of the manor, from the south-east near Wedding Wood in Kilnwick to its northern boundary.
The manor of Bracken on the Wolds was listed as "Brachen[1]" on page 86 of the Domesday Book in 1086, where it is recorded in the Hundred of Sneculfcros as "In Brachen, Erneis 6 carucates." Erneis is believed to be Erneis de Buron, who held other manors in the area. There is some evidence to suggest that it was formerly a village of greater size with a chapel, graveyard and numerous houses. It is also listed as "Braken" in some medieval sources.
