Qualifier by FIDE World Cup

Qualified are three players who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd. If any of these players already qualified for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 or the FIDE World Championship Match 2024 at the moment of the beginning of World Cup via another qualification path, the qualification spot(s) shall be awarded, in order of priority:
- the player who finished in 4th place in the World Cup;
- according to rating.

Qualifier by FIDE Grand Swiss

The winner and the runner-up of Grand Swiss shall qualify for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024. If one or both these players has (-ve) already qualified to the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 at the moment of the beginning of Grand Swiss via different qualification track or do (-es) not need to qualify for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024, the qualification spot(s) shall go to the highest-placed player(s) in the final standings who has (-ve) not yet qualified to the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 at the moment of the beginning of Grand Swiss.[8]

Qualifier by FIDE Circuit

The player with the best results during one year (2023) in FIDE rated tournaments who has not already qualified from Runner-up of the World Championchip match, FIDE World Cup or FIDE Grand Swiss. The winner becomes a qualifier before determining a qualifier by rating.

Qualifier by rating

Qualified by rating is the highest-rated player by standard rating as of 1 January 2024, provided that the player has played at least 4 FIDE Circuit tournaments with standard time control and who is not qualified by any other qualifier path. Despite former World Champion Magnus Carlsen having a large rating lead (68 points as of the May 2023 rating lists[9]) over the highest-rated player other than Ding Liren (qualified for the World Chess Championship 2024 as the winner of the World Chess Championship 2023) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (qualified for the Candidates Tournament as the runner-up of the World Chess Championship 2023), Carlsen has stated that he lacks motivation to play classical chess because of the large amount of preparation required to get a game, and is not likely to participate in the Candidates Tournament as a result.[10]

FIDE and Grand Chess Tour agreement

In April 2022, before announcing all the qualification methods, FIDE announced that the top two finishers in the 2023 Grand Chess Tour would qualify to the 2024 Candidates Tournament. FIDE promised that more details will follow, but later announced qualification paths excluding the Grand Chess Tour, without providing an explanation for the change.[11][12]

Notes

  1. Russian players' flags are displayed as the FIDE flag, as Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned from FIDE-rated events in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[7]
  2. Provided the player has played at least 4 classical time control tournaments eligible for the 2023 FIDE Circuit.
