Coalition against Communalism
Coalition against Communalism is a San Francisco Bay area organization formed in 1992 in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya.[1] The Coalition played a role in the controversy over the portrayal of Hindus in California school textbooks in 2005-2006.[2]
The organization's website does not disclose information about its leadership, membership, or sources of funding. The group's website is donated by EKTA, a Berkeley, California-based organization. It has also worked closely with the Friends of South Asia. The Hindu nationalist website Disinfolab[3] claims the organization was founded by Berkeley-based Raju Rajgopal but does not cite its sources for that claim. Another pro-Hindu organization has attempted to map its connections using, among other things, webhosting IP addresses. That report did not identify a strong link to Rajgobal, noting only that he appeared on panels with supposed leaders of the Coalition[4]
In Kashmir, Coalition against Communalism opposes "widespread abuses of human rights in the State of Jammu and Kashmir by the State or Central government" as well as "the continuing violence in Jammu & Kashmir, especially the targeting of innocent civilians for political ends, perpetrated by terrorists". It has in the past supported donations to the St. Xavier's Social Service Society, Ahmedabad.
The Coalition Against Genocide claims the Coalition against Communalism as a member.[5] Although as of 2023 the organization describes itself as "dormant" its impact continues through the online presence of its articles.[6]
