"Cupid" is a song recorded by South Korean girl group Fifty Fifty. It was released as a single in the physical format, titled The Beginning: Cupid, on February 24, 2023. The song's English version is known as the "Twin" version, as it features only two members of the group, Sio and Aran, singing the song.

"Cupid" became the fastest K-pop song to enter both of the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. In May 2023, it became the first K-pop girl group song to reach the top ten in the UK.[1] It topped the charts in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and New Zealand and reached the top ten in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Taiwan.

Release and promotion

On February 15, 2023, Attrakt revealed a promotional timetable on Fifty Fifty's social media accounts, announcing the upcoming release of the group's first single album on February 24, exactly a hundred days after their debut.[2] It was revealed three days later that the single album was named The Beginning: Cupid which consists of three tracks: the lead single "Cupid", another version of it which was labeled as its "Twin" version, and the instrumental track.[3] As scheduled, the single was released to various music platforms.[4]

On February 20 and 22, the music video teasers for "Cupid" were released.[5] The music video was released on the same day where the group was performing the single for the first time on stage at M Countdown.[6] They continued to perform "Cupid" on several music shows in the same week.[7]

On April 8, the official sped-up rendition of "Twin" version was released on various streaming platforms under the artist name "Sped Up 8282".[8] Warner Records sent the "Twin" version of "Cupid" to Italian radio stations on April 21,[9] and impacted US contemporary hit radio on May 6.[10]

Composition

"Cupid" was composed by Adam von Mentzer, who produced "Lovin' Me" from the previous EP, Mac Felländer-Tsai, and Louise Udin.[11] These three handled the production with Siahn as well.[11] They were also in charge of the lyrics, with an additional of Keena, one of the group members, participating in writing the original version's lyrics.[11] The song and its "Twin Ver." were composed in the key of D major, with a tempo of 120 beats per minute.[12] Musically, "Cupid" was described as a song that combines retro-style sensibility based on minimal disco beats and funky basslines.[3]

So Seung-geun of IZM gave the song 4.5 out of 5 stars, writing that Fifty Fifty had found their own color.[13] Music critic Kim Yoon-ha from Yes24 noted how "Cupid" highlighted the vocals, putting them to the forefront instead of considering the voice as one of several instruments, stating that this approach reminded Kim of the Korean songs of the late 2000s rather than modern K-pop.[14]

Commercial performance

"Cupid" initially placed at number 10 on Singapore's RIAS Top Streaming Chart in the chart issue dated March 3-9, 2023,[15] before topping the chart two weeks later.[16]

In Canada, "Cupid" debuted at number 49 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 in the chart issue dated March 23, 2023,[17][18] before peaking at number 6 in the chart issue dated May 20, 2023.[19] In the United States, the song debuted at number 8 on Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart in the chart issue dated week of March 11, 2023.[20], before ascending to number 2 in the chart issue dated May 13, 2023.[21] The song initially appeared on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart at number 12 in the chart issue dated March 25, 2023,[22] before entering the main chart, US Billboard Hot 100, at number 100 the following week with 5.7 million US streams, becoming the group's first entry on the chart.[23] They became the fastest Korean act to enter the chart and the sixth Korean group to do so after Wonder Girls, BTS, Blackpink, Twice, and NewJeans.[24]

Globally, "Cupid" debuted at number 106 on the Billboard Global 200,[25] and number 119 on the Billboard Global Excl. US in the chart issue dated March 25, 2023.[26] The song became their first top-10 hit on Billboard Global Excl. US when it reached number 9 with 40.2 million streams and 1,000 digital downloads sold in the chart issue dated April 22, 2023.[27] It also reached the same place on Billboard Global 200 with 55.2 million streams and 2,000 digital downloads sold a week later, making Fifty Fifty the fifth Korean group to enter the chart's top-10 after BTS, Blackpink, Big Bang, and NewJeans.[28][29]

A sped-up rendering of its "Twin" version became an audio source for TikTok challenges, earning the moniker "the best pre-chorus of 2023" and has been used in more than 2.6 million videos as of April 12.[30][31] Overall, the song had been used on 8 million videos in total and gathered about 12 billion views on the platform as of May 8.[32]

In the United Kingdom, "Cupid" debuted at number 96 on the UK Singles Chart, making Fifty Fifty the fastest K-pop group to enter the UK Charts.[33] In May 2023, it reached a new peak of number eight becoming the first K-pop girl group song to achieve this milestone and making Fifty Fifty the second Kpop girl group after Blackpink to reach the top forty of the charts.[1][32]
