To commemorate its release, music content from Dohna Dohna was added to rhythm-run action game Muse Dash globally in December 2020. [10]

Plot

The game takes place in Asougi City, a fictional provincial-town facing the Seto Inland Sea that has been completely taken over by the "Asougi Group",[11] a monolithic megacorporation that controls every aspect of its citizens' lives.[12]

Despite its apparent benevolence to the citizens, Asougi also frequently disappears citizens for arbitrary offenses, especially failing to uphold their rigorous propaganda, sentencing them to what they euphemistically call "Temp Work."[13]:Ep.1 The oppressive nature of the regime has given rise to some level of bubbling unrest, manifesting itself in the form of the "Anti-Aso" clans, groups of rebels who fight back against Asougi through armed robbery and the selling of women for profit.[12][3][14]

As the Founder's Birthday Ceremony approaches, Asougi's grip on the population tightens, and the Anti-Aso clans agitate.[15] Meanwhile, the general public continues to turn a blind-eye to goings-on in the city.[8]

Players take control of one of the Anti-Aso clans in the city, Nayuta, and through the game's mechanics, control both their business and battle operations as they strive to outdo the other clans on the ground[16] and ultimately topple Asougi itself.

Characters

Kuma (クマ)
Kuma is Nayuta's second-in-command, and is the main protagonist of the game's story. A proficient gunman, he is frequently delegated to the most troublesome and unsavory duties. Though more hardworking and serious than the other members, Kuma seems to be rather popular.[12]
When Kuma was young, his parents were killed by Asougi troopers, who then attempted to take him away to be used as the next "Body Donor". However, his sister, Amane Nagara, saved him by taking his place, leaving her presumed dead. To exact his sworn revenge on Asougi, Kuma joined an Anti-Aso clan named Nayuta.[13]:Ep.15
Zappa (ザッパ)
Zappa is the reckless and boisterous founder of the Nayuta clan, of which he is also the leader. Fittingly, he is always seeking out ways to have fun.[12]
His real name is Kazutaka Yamamoto, the youngest son of the Asougi founding family. Disillusioned by their corrupt regime, he decided to leave Asougi and found Nayuta.[13]:Ep.23
Porno (ポルノ)
Porno is a trickster with an affinity for sexual pranks. She was a victim of a nefarious organization called "Reach" before she was rescued by Kuma, and Nayuta took her in.[13]:Ep.10 Porno sees herself as Kuma's superior, and claims to have sex with him to "improve his skills".[12]
Kirakira (キラキラ)
Kirakira is a pink-haired student with an easygoing personality who joined Nayuta to escape the "boredom" of average life.[12] She's a fashionista, and made Nayuta's combat outfits herself.[13] When the conflict turns lethal, she feels too scared to go on, but Kuma helps her find reason to keep fighting.[13]:Ep.15
Her real name, at least according to the English version, is Macaron Shinomiya.[13]:Ep.26
Torataro (とらたろう)
Torataro is a runaway and dropout who co-founded Nayuta with Zappa. He's a skilled mechanic, and made all of his weapons himself. He sees Kuma as his rival, with whom he often squabbles over who is Nayuta's number-two, although Kuma doesn't seem to care about it. Torataro also dislikes his current nickname and wants to drop it.[12]
Medico (メディコ)
Medico is a nursing student from Nara who is unaware of the dystopian state of Asougi city. She went to Asougi in search of her father, a journalist who came to the city to investigate and went missing.[13]:Ep.3 Nayuta saves her from an arbitrary arrest during a raid on a local hospital, and she helps them in turn by treating an injured Torataro. Nayuta later hires her as a member of the clan.[13][12]
Her real name is Minako Taisouji.
Antenna (アンテナ)
Kirakira's best friend and classmate who never shows up to school. She is a genius electrical engineer, and has a fascination with radio waves. She later joins Nayuta, where she is in charge of intelligence, security, and lock-breaking. She claims to be driven by intellectual curiosity, and others find her 'weird' due to her social ineptitude.[13]
Her real name is Eria Arecibo-Kouda.[13]:Ep.11
Joker (ジョーカー)
Joker is a young boy with a slight and feminine build who was brought to Asougi for their human experimentation program as a "Body Donor". Nayuta saves him from his fate during a raid on an Asougi lab.[13]:Ep.7 Afterwards, he joins Nayuta out of gratitude.[12]
ALyCE (アリス)
ALyCE is a blonde-haired woman with a childlike appearance and an equally childish and innocent personality. Despite this, she is actually a lethal sniper. She and her twin sister, YAMMy, were initially mercenaries hired by the Flattt clan, but after they are defeated, she joins Nayuta for protection.
Her appearance is modeled on Alice-chan, AliceSoft's mascot character.
Kikuchiyo (菊千代)
Kikuchiyo is the heiress to the Shinonome clan and an honor student at an all-girl's school. She inherits her family's mission to take down the Asougi authorities. Kikuchiyo specializes in using her katana as a fighter, but is otherwise not involved with most of Shinonome's criminal operations. After fighting alongside Kuma to resolve an incident, she develops feelings for him. After being kicked out of Shinonome, she makes friends with Nayuta, becoming their member.[13]:Ep.8-9
Her full name is Kikuchiyo Mibu.
Mistress (ミストレス)
Mistress is the owner of the black-market general store for the Anti-Aso clans called VILE/VAN.[12] She's an arms dealer with connections, and she organizes the clans with high-paying clients. In reality, she is Hisamitsu's secretary under the name of Izumi, supposedly part of her real name.[13]
Shinazu (品須)
The Shinonome clan's second-in-command at the beginning of the story, where he works under Kikuchiyo to help do her biddings. When he finds out Kikuchiyo is having feelings for someone from a rival clan, believing this would be distracting her, he has the clan abandon her and disown her as their leader.
Tsuina (終名)
Kikuchiyo's younger half-sister. Unlike most of the Shinonome clan, who use swords and other bladed weapons, she uses a shotgun for the fights. After Kikuchiyo is abandoned by Shinonome, Tsuina becomes the new heir to the clan.
Murasaki (ムラサキ)
The leader of the Flattt clan. Unlike the leaders of the other Anti-Aso clans, he stays away from fights, preferring to use his wits and negotiate with people and, if necessary, have his underlings do his biddings.
Shion (シオン)
The Flattt clan's second-in-command, she is Murasaki's right-hand woman, and is usually the one in charge of Flattt's raid operations. She has a crush on Joker, whom she finds really cute, to the point where she forcefully takes him away.
Hisamitsu (玖光)
Chairman of Asougi Heavy Industries, involved in their robotics program. He serves as a central antagonist of the story.
His full name is Hisamitsu Yamamoto, and he is in fact Zappa's cousin.[13]

Development and release

Dohna Dohna was developed by AliceSoft. The scenario was written by Dice Korogashi, with character designs and illustrations by Gyokai. Kanikama provided super-deformed illustrations.[17][18] The opening theme song, "Dohna Dohna no Uta" (ドーナドーナのうた, Dōnadōna no uta), was sung by Tsukino.[16]

Prior to launch, AliceSoft released a free trial for download on Fanza Games on November 5, 2020.[19] The package edition, download edition and deluxe edition of Dohna Dohna were released for Windows PCs on November 27, 2020, with compatibility for Windows 8/10.[20] The "Deluxe" edition of the game was bundled with a dakimakura cover, a CD copy of the original soundtrack, and a copy of Haru Urare, a small game considered to be Dohna Dohna's spiritual predecessor.[18][21] Other merchandise such as telephone cards and pin badges were also included as purchase and pre-order bonuses.[22] The English version, translated and published by Shiravune, was released on Johren Games on October 29, 2021.[8]

Reception

On Getchu.com, a redistributor of visual novel and anime products, Dohna Dohna ranked as the second best selling bishōjo game for the month of its release.[24] Deluxe edition of the game also ranked as the eighth best selling bishōjo game at the same period.[24] According to Japanese magazine "BugBug", it was the best selling bishōjo game from November 16, 2020, to December 15, 2020.[20]

Tadamoto Ōsawa, the editor-in-chief of "BugBug", praised Dohna Dohna for its visual effects, user interface and illustration.[9] Ryo from Media Clip praised the background music and pop graphics, and wrote that they "make the game fun and cheerful."[4]

Taiwanese publication 4Gamers was pleased with the handling of characters' flaws and motivations, which "grounded the story in a sense of realism," and praised the depiction of "the disappointing side of human nature." They also noted that there was depth to the "quite responsible" story.[5]
