Gertrud Züricher

Gertrud Züricher (13 January 1871 Bern - 13 August 1956 ) was a Swiss artist and folklorist .

Life

Gertrud Züricher trained as a secondary school teacher and drawing teacher at the Bern Art School. From 1896 to 1926, she was a teacher at the municipal girls' school in Bern.[1] In 1899, she made silhouette postcards with subjects from the city of Bern.[2]

In addition to her professional activities, Züricher devoted herself to botanical, folklore, and historical studies. She maintained an extensive herbarium, and compiled the taxonomic plant names.[3] She collected Swiss nursery rhymes,[4] and based on the research of her great-grandfather Carl Friedrich Ludwig Lohner, and researched the history of the city of Thun and her maternal ancestors.[5][6]

Züricher was a supporter of the temperance movement, and president of the Bernese teetotalers' section of the Swiss Teachers' Association.[2]  She also campaigned for the introduction of women's suffrage .

Her legacy is in the Burgerbibliothek of Berne,[7] and in the Swiss Idiotikon archive.[6]
