Gertrude (code name)

The Gertrude or Gertrud was the code name of the joint invasion plan for Turkey by Nazi Germany and Kingdom of Bulgaria,[1] the idea began forming in the beginning of the summer of 1942. This code name was eventually changed.

Hitler had seen pan-Turkism as a threat, and Turks were not considered to be an Aryan nation. After the invasion, Turkey would be split between the Kingdom of Bulgaria, the puppet state of Greece, Vichy France, Iraq and the newly established Armenian and Georgian puppet states.

The project was abandoned because of the rapid advance of the Red Army in the Caucasus region, and the Allied invasion of Sicily.[2]
