The H3 Podcast is one of the highest ranking podcasts in the United States. Media Monitors ranked the podcast 17th for the second quarter of 2022.[2] In the third quarter of 2021, the podcast was ranked 21st by audience size[3] and 27th by reach in the United States by Edison Research.[4]
History
The H3 Podcast was originally streamed on Twitch before being moved to YouTube.[5] Its first episode was uploaded to the H3 Podcast YouTube channel on April 7, 2017, featuring Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty.[6] The podcast began with conversational interviews with notable internet personalities such as PewDiePie, Post Malone and Jake Paul.[7][8] Also in 2017, the Kleins created the channel H3 Podcast Highlights, which posts highlights of podcast episodes.[9]
As the podcast continued to develop, crew members gradually became more integrated into the show, particularly in non-guest episodes. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted further changes to the podcast, with a decreased emphasis on guests and increased crew involvement. During this period, "H3 After Dark" was added to the schedule as a second weekly episode.
The launch of the "Frenemies" podcast, co-hosted by Ethan Klein and internet personality Trisha Paytas, significantly boosted the H3 Podcast's popularity. After the end of "Frenemies" in 2021, the weekly lineup expanded to include the "H3TV" and "Off The Rails" episodes, while the politically-themed "Leftovers" podcast, co-hosted by Klein and Hasan Piker, was also added. Since 2021, Hila has primarily appeared in the "After Dark" episodes.
As of 2023, the H3 Podcast has 5 scheduled live episodes per week, including "H3TV" on Mondays, the members-only "See You Next Tuesday" on Tuesdays, "Off The Rails" on Wednesdays, "Leftovers" on Thursdays, and "After Dark" on Fridays.
Controversies and lawsuits
Triller Fight Club II LLC v. The H3 Podcast
In May 2021, Triller's event company filed an updated lawsuit to the US District Court for the Central District of California against the H3 Podcast and the Kleins, seeking $50 million in damages. The lawsuit alleged copyright infringement in the now deleted podcast episode titled Jake Paul Fight Was a Disaster, which aired five days after the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren fight and featured knockout footage along with Ethan's commentary on the event.[10]
Triller has now filed four separate lawsuits against Klein for the Paul vs. Askren fight, as well as alleged defamation through the Kleins' podcast. The first to be thrown out was the suit over a joke Klein made, stating that Triller advertised Kevin Hart, when he was nowhere to be found on the app. The court deemed that this was not defamation.[11]
YouTube suspensions
In May 2022, the H3 Podcast channel was suspended when Ethan joked on air that someone should bomb the NRA convention.[12][13] In October 2022, the same channel received a strike and one week suspension following comments directed at Jewish conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro, in which Ethan stated he hoped "Ben gets gassed first. Or last" in the event of a second Holocaust. In a statement, a YouTube spokesperson said that the channel was given a strike for "violating the platform's harassment policy". Ethan responded later that "[a] few white supremacists successfully lobbied YouTube to suspend me, a Jewish dual citizen of Israel & USA, for antisemitism."[12][13][14]
In response to repeated suspensions, the podcast incorporated an AirCleaner-2 live event protection delay system.
