History

Hanswar is a small town situated on the banks of river Ghaghra (locally known as Saryu). From the pre-historic period to the time of Akbar, the limits of the province and its internal divisions seem to have been constantly changing, and the name of Oudh, or Awadh, seems to have been applicable to only one of the ancient divisions or Sarkars, nearly corresponding to old Pachhimrath. The title of Subedar of Awadh is mentioned as early as 1280 A.D.

Hanswar’s history dates back long before to the time of first Mughal. It’s valorous Chandrawanshi rulers such as Raja Ranvijay Singh of Hanswar and her Durgaswaroop wife Rani Jairaj Kunwar who fought Babur for Ram mandir with 25000 brave men at arms and Rani Jairaj Kumari with 3000 females and marted on soil for their pride and religion.

The wars were led by Rani Jayaraj Kunwari of Hanswar and Swami Maheshanand. Rani led the women army and Maheshanand led the Sadhus army. The intensity of these wars can be gauged from the martyrdom of Rani and Maheshanand and their soldiers. Between 1556 and 1605 AD, Hanswar was also famous for Sadaprat which was arranged by royal family of hanswar state in which any hungry person can have food which went for almost 24 hours a day. Hanswar Riyasat is one of the very few and oldest surviving estate dating long back to 1300s. .[3]
