Hu Mei (Ming dynasty)

Hu Mei (胡美) (?-1384), born Tingrui (廷瑞), renamed after meeting Zhu Yuanzhang, was a military general of the Ming dynasty. Hu and his family were executed by Zhu during the Hu Weiyong case.[1][2][3][4][5]

Biography

Hu was born in Henan Jiangbei province during the Yuan dynasty in modern-day Mianyang county (沔陽縣), Hubei province. Hu Mei served as the Prime minister of Jiangxi and guarded Longxing (龍興). Zhu Yuanzhang captured Jiangzhou and sent someone to capture Hu. Hu Mei sent Zheng Renjie (鄭仁傑) to surrender to Zhu, but asked not to disband his troops. Liu Bowen hinted that Zhu fabricated written history on Hu Mei.[6]

After Hu surrendered, his subordinates refused to surrender, rebelled and captured Hongdu (洪都). Zhu Yuanzhang pacified the rebellion and executed Hu's subordinates. After that, Hu captured Wuchang, Huaidong, Huzhou, Pingjiang, Wuxi (武昌、淮東、湖州、平江、無錫等地), and met Zhang Shicheng.[7]

Later Hu captured Fujian, Suguan, Guangze, Shaowu, Jianyang, Jianning, Fuzhou, Yanping, and Xinghua (福建、杉關、光澤、邵武、建陽、建寧、福州、延平、興化).[6] Hu was then appointed Zhongshu Pingzhang (中書平章).[3]

During the Hu Weiyong case, Hu Mei's eldest daughter, son, and son-in-law were convicted of crimes and creating disorder in the imperial palace. Zhu Yuanzhang then forced Hu Mei to commit suicide and then executed his son and son-in-law too.[3]
