Powell was named Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week two days later.[7] During a game against Texas A&M on January 2, 2021, he suffered a serious concussion, causing him to miss the remainder of the season.[8] In 10 games as a freshman, he averaged 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game.
