Career
At the age of 18, in October 2018, Kelvin Kiptum won the Eldoret Half Marathon in Kenya with a time of 1:02:01.[1] He then debuted internationally at the Lisbon Half Marathon in March 2019, finishing fifth with a new personal best of 59:54. In December 2020, he set significant consecutive best in the event of 58:42, placing sixth at the Valencia Half Marathon.[1] In 2021, he ran 59:35 and 59:02 half marathons in Lens, France (first) and Valencia (eighth) respectively.[1]
On 4 December 2022, the 23-year-old pulled off an upset when debuting in the classic 42.195 km distance at the Valencia Marathon. With the quickest second half ever (60:15), he set the fourth-fastest time on the world all-time list of 2:01:53, becoming only the third man in history to break 2:02 after world record holder Eliud Kipchoge (2:01:09 and 2:01:39) and Kenenisa Bekele (2:01:41). Kiptum's winning time was by far the fastest marathon debut ever, smashing the course record by over a minute. He beat the 2022 world marathon champion Tamirat Tola, pre-race favourite, among others.[3][4][2]
In his following race,[1] a debut at a World Marathon Major on 23 April 2023, Kiptum triumphed decisively at the London Marathon, setting the second-fastest mark in history of 2:01:25, a course record. He broke from the field after the 30 km mark and completed the second half of the race in 59:45, the fastest half marathon ever in a full marathon race. He beat second-placed Geoffrey Kamworor by nearly three minutes and Kipchoge's course record of 2:02:37 by more than a minute. Kiptum missed the world record by 16 seconds.[5][6][7]
