Since 2014, Krasnodon Raion, including Khryashchuvate, has been controlled by forces of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR / LNR).[2] Following the 2022 annexation referendums in Russian-occupied Ukraine, Russia has claimed the settlement as part of their LPR / LNR.
The Novosvitlivka refugee convoy attack occurred near Khryashchuvate in mid-2014, with refugees killed as they fled the War in Donbas. The Ukrainian Army then retreated from the settlement, after fierce fighting, in late August 2014, as LNR / LPR forces then took control.[3] The settlement came to the attention of global media in 2015 due to the extent of destruction there.[4]
