L2: Empuraan

Empuraan (or simply L2: E ) is an upcoming Indian Malayalam-language action thriller film directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor through the production house Aashirvad Cinemas, Empuraan is intended as the second installment of a trilogy, the first one being Prithviraj's directorial debut - the 2019 film Lucifer, which featured Mohanlal in the titular role.

Following the widespread success of the first film, Empuraan was announced in June 2019 with a Press meet held at Mohanlal’s home and attended by the core team - Prithviraj, Murali Gopy, Antony Perumbavoor and Mohanlal.[1] Although production was scheduled to start in mid-2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant delays due to logistics and the need to shoot abroad.[2] Pre-production has been started in August 2022 and filming is expected to commence by the third quarter of 2023.[3][4]

Development

Following the widespread success of the first film, the second part was announced in June 2019 with a Press meet held at Mohanlal’s home and attended by the core team - Prithviraj, Murali Gopy, Antony Perumbavoor and Mohanlal.[5] The title was revealed to be L2: Empuraan, but it is simply known as L2: E or Lucifer 2. It was announced that the film will not be a continuation of Lucifer but will showcase the events which happens before and after Lucifer and that Zayed Masood's role in Stephen's life is not small as shown in the first part. Prithviraj is set to return as director along with Gopy as the writer and the rest of the crew.

Pre-Production

Although production was scheduled to start in mid-2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant delays due to logistics and the need to shoot abroad.[6] Pre-production has been started in August 2022 and filming is expected to commence by the third quarter of 2023.[7][8]

Future

As announced by the team, Lucifer is a trilogy which means that there will be a third film, a follow-up to Empuraan. The third film is currently untitled and is developed simultaneously with L2: E. The third film depends on the critical and commercial performance of Lucifer 2.
