Early life
Born in Mataró, Spain, to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother,[1][2] Lamine Yamal spent most of his youth in Barcelona.[3][4][5]
Club career
Growing through the youth ranks of La Masia, Lamine Yamal was soon viewed as one of the academy's best prospects.[3][6][7][8] Whilst added to the Juvenil A team—already above his age grade—for the 2022–23 season,[7] Lamine Yamal was selected by Xavi to train with the first team along other youngster in early September 2022.[1][4] Whilst still yet to sign his first professional contract with the club, he appeared to be one of the academy members to most impress the Catalan coach. [6][9][10] He made his first-team debut on 29 April 2023, replacing Gavi in the 83rd minute in a 4–0 win against Real Betis in La Liga, becoming the youngest player to ever appear for Barcelona's first team at 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days old. On 14 May 2023, he won his first title with Barça, as he was part of the squad that won the 2022–23 La Liga.[11]
International career
Lamine Yamal is a youth international for Spain.[12] In 2021, he played 4 games and scored 1 goal for Spain under-16s.[4]
In 2022, he also played with the Spanish under-15s.[13]
Style of play
A left-footed forward with great dribbling, passing and scoring abilities, Lamine Yamal is able to play both as a centre-forward, an attacking midfielder or a winger, mostly on the right flank.[1][4][6][9][12]
With his technical profile, Lamine Yamal was soon compared to Argentinian idol Lionel Messi, like many La Masia trainees before him,[1][3][14][15] but also to more recent Barça star Ansu Fati.[6][7][16]
