LSDA was launched in 2023 ahead of the 2024 election cycle with the goal of mobilizing progressive law students while also providing professional development opportunities for students who want to make progressive legal activism and policy work part of their careers. As of April 2023, LSDA had more than 200 members across the country.

Activities

Law School Democrats of America seeks to connect law students with state parties, campaigns, and grassroots mobilization efforts around the country that need voter protection support, research into area voting laws, and GOTV.

In its inaugural year, LSDA focuses on the 2023 gubernatorial races in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi, as well as the Virginia state legislature elections. 2024 will see LSDA operating in every state in the country with a focus on eight target swing states.

Historical Analog

An earlier, unaffiliated iteration of Law School Dems was also known as the National Democratic Law Students Council (NDLSC) and was founded in 2006 at Harvard Law School by David Burd. The organization's first event was a national convention, keynoted by DNC Chairman Howard Dean, at Harvard Law School.[1] NDLSC at one point reached a membership height of over 1500 law students at more than 85 law schools located throughout the United States.

Past conventions were held in Boston, New York City, Columbus, Ohio, Chicago,[2] and Washington, D.C.[3] Notable convention speakers include former DNC Chairman and Vermont Governor Howard Dean, New York Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Democratic political consultant Bob Shrum, Illinois Treasurer and former U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias, Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, and Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

The 2011 Law School Democrats National Convention took place April 1–3 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
