Lisa is describe as a very helpful person who is considered cheerful but never outright silly.[9] Lisa was once a scientist at DOATEC, being part of the organization's Epsilon Project that involved abducting and modifying the body of the comatose Mugen Tenshin ninja, Hayate, into a superior physical body with superhuman abilities,[10] until an accident during transportation freed the test subject from the facility's clutches.[11][8] She was also the lead scientist for the organization's Alpha Project that involve the cloning of the Mugen Tenshin kunoichi, Kasumi.[8] In the world of wrestling, Lisa is an established and undefeated masked luchadora going by her ring name, La Mariposa, who quickly rose to the peak of stardom only a short while after her debut.[11][12] She is also close friends with fellow wrestler, Tina Armstrong.[7]
In Dead or Alive 4, she appears as her luchadora persona where she matches her wrestling skills against Tina's during a wresting match. She later confronts Hayate, revealing to him that she had manipulated him into destroying DOATEC. She later reveals this while talking to Helena Douglas, as she shows to have some form of resentment with the company, specifically with Victor Donovan's motives. At the end, she teams up with Tina to defeat a rival wrestling team, revealing her true identity in the process.
In Dead or Alive 5, it is revealed that Lisa is an operative for Donovan's new organization, MIST. After she frees Hayate who was held captive by MIST, the Mugen Tenshin ninjas and Ryu Hayabusa destroyed the MIST laboratory. Lisa was then caught in the explosion following the deadly battle between Rig and Hayate.[10]
After the event where Lisa was seemingly killed, it was later rumored that she had retired from wrestling.[10] However, Lisa survived and manage to get out of MIST's oil rig hideout as of Dead or Alive 6, and the MIST organization made NiCO her replacement. During the sixth tournament, Lisa prepared prototype anti-Epsilon brace to prevent the Epsilon freezing Hayate's body for a limited time during his encounter with one of the MIST agents.
In Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, Lisa was invited to Zack Island where she spent the next two weeks on vacation. She would later appear in the sequel Dead or Alive Xtreme 2[13] and in Dead or Alive Paradise.[14]
Design and gameplay
Lisa is officially list as being 5'9" in height, 117 pounds in weight, and her measurements are B36-W22-H34.[2] She is depicted as a young dark skinned woman with a voluptuous and athletic build, who has short bob brunette hair, dark brown eyes, and full lips. The Dead or Alive History -Team Ninja Freaks- book reveals her ethnicity to be African-American.[3] Dead or Alive series creator and head of Team Ninja, Tomonobu Itagaki, created the character to appeal to U.S. fans of the series, representing a multi-ethnic country. The character was also created as Itagaki was in need of at least 8 female characters for Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, which only had 7 characters at the time of the game's development, as Itagaki stated that only 7 characters in the game would be considered boring to have.[3] The character was originally given the name "Monica" during development, but due to the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal surrounding Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, the character was given the name Lisa instead.[3] When planning Dead or Alive 4's development, Itagaki was interested in including another wrestling character to the game's roster and made the decision to make Lisa as a luchadora in the game.[15] Her initial appearance on the cover of Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, depicted her in a red-and-white striped, halterneck, string microkini top with a blue flower on the left cup, and matching bikini bottom. In Dead or Alive 4 and Dead or Alive: Dimensions, her default luchadora outfit consist of a white-and-pink chrome bikini with a fringed skirt, a pair of stockings, pink chrome boots, an arm- and wristband on her left arm, a sleeve on her right arm, a choker, and a mask with a butterfly on the front.[11][12] In Dead or Alive 5, she was given a more realistic appearance as Team Ninja desired to evolve the characters in a slightly realistic direction.[16] Lisa was given the same short haircut, but lighter skin tone and smaller, mature-looking eyes. Itagaki, who had left Team Ninja a few years prior to the game's development, was not fond of Lisa being given a lighter skin tone, calling it "a crime against the entire world" and "a discrimination by color".[17][18] Her outfit in Dead or Alive 5 consists of a red and orange wrestling top showing her stomach, tight pants with red-orange decals, and a frilly flamboyant eye-mask.[11][7] In Dead or Alive 6, Lisa's outfit is gold and brown with armor designs and an emerald gem at the center of her lower breast. She has a long pink and yellow feathered accents at the back and a matching gold wrestling boots and black kneepads. Her luchadora mask is a darker shades of gold with pink feathered accents with red several beads and the emerald gem in the center. She also has a charcoal gray elbow pads in each sides.[10]
According to Matthew Rorie of GameSpot, La Mariposa in Dead or Alive 4 offers intriguing wrestling moves that are more focused on striking opponents rather than throwing them compared to other wrestler characters in the series like Tina and Bass Armstrong. La Mariposa has a number of interesting moves which can beguile opponents such as her unique Corbata throw, which can be entered at the end of a number of different attack animations. Like other characters in the series, she can also utilize surrounding walls and objects in certain environments to her advantage.[19] IGN considers her as "the best kicker in the game" and "the type of character that people either choose because they're absolutely devastating with or people choose because they can successfully perform one or two combos with said fighter".[20] La Mariposa's moveset greatly improved in Dead or Alive 5, as she was given more throws that lead into guaranteed damage and an enhanced mix-up game. She was also given a new run stance referred to as, Carrera, where from multiple attacks, she can transition into the run and has five different options during the run animation.[21] La Mariposa is considered an offensive powerhouse who relies on pressure tactics and utilizes offensive attacks from range thanks to her long legs and various forms of leaping attacks. Her unpredictable and unorthodox approach in her fighting style makes her a difficult opponent to fight against. Her moveset is considered similar to that of Ayane and Tina. She's not as quick as some of the other character in the series, but her diverse moveset, which works at all ranges, makes up for this. IGN states that La Mariposa is a good fighter for players who want to play as a grappler character with a diverse moveset and a powerful pressure game, who wish to dictate the pace of a battle by being the one who initiates the offense, or feel comfortable cancelling unsafe pokes by turning their back to your opponent.[22]
Merchandise and promotion
Lisa is featured on a handful of merchandise, promotional posters, and wallpapers for the series. She is featured on the covers of Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and Dead or Alive 4, and was also featured on the covers of the Dead or Alive 4 guide books. A PVC figurine of Lisa was made as part of the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball One Coin Figure Series released in October 2004 and she was part of a set of playing cards for Dead or Alive Xtreme 2. Lisa was made playable for the Dead or Alive 4 demo released on Xbox Live in 2006.
Reception
The character has received positive reception among critics. IGN called her "a wondergirl in every sense of the word. She moves like a wound up junkie in a bar fight, so you can use this to your advantage in being highly unpredictable in battle".[20] In 2006, IGN featured Lisa in their "Videogame Babe of the Day" series, calling her a beauty who "may be one of the only virtual women ever who would look good even with taped-up nerd glasses on".[13] GameDaily included her among the "Top 25 Hottest Game Babes", saying "Watching Lisa... err... La Mariposa flying around the wrestling ring makes us want to take up lucha libre, if for nothing else than to let her give us "personal" instruction. It sure beats high school wrestling".[23] GameDaily also included her in the "Babe of the Week: All-American Girls" list, calling her a smoking hot lady with many talents and acknowledging her multiple occupations.[24] GameDaily later included her among "chicks that will kick your ass" along with Kasumi and Tina Armstrong.[25] In 2011, Aubrey Sitterson of UGO Networks rank her 16th on the "Fighting Games' Finest Female Fighters", giving praise to her luchadora persona.[26] In 2014, Brazilian site GameHall's "Portal PlayGame" mentioned her in their "Top 100 hottest characters in games".[27] In 2015, Artemis of NoobFeed placed her 7th in "The Top 10 Luchadores in Video Games", saying "With various aerial moves that show off her skills as a luchador as well as her cunning and wit, she's not to be underestimated". Artemis also stated "Her fighting style does truly reflect that of the “Butterfly” – which is what La Mariposa means – and she uses this to her advantage".[28] Rachel Anders of LevelSkip included her in "The Top 10 Sexiest Women in Dead or Alive", ranking her 8th. In 2019, Watchmojo mentioned her in their "Top 10 Dead Or Alive Characters" list.[29] Kakuchopurei ranked her 8th "best Dead or Alive waifu", calling her "a great example of a strong lass climbing out from the dredges of a fanservice game to a mothership fighting title, showing the world she can Lucha Libre while looking fabulous".[30]
