Mariano Argüello Vargas

Mariano Argüello Vargas (1890[1]–1970) was a top Nicaraguan lawyer, politician and diplomat [2] who served as Vice President of Nicaragua in 1947.[3] He was appointed alongside President Víctor Manuel Román y Reyes on 15 August 1947 on a temporary basis .[4], the post having been terminated on 22 November 1947 following the recognition of the Roman y Reyes' presideency by the Truman administration. .[5]

He had a LL.D. law degree from the Universidad de Oriente y Mediodía.[1] and was President of the Senate of National Congress 1947–1948, 1952–1953, 1954–1955,[6] 1956–1957, 1963 and 1966.[7]

He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1940 to 1946.[8] On March 8, 1945, in Mexico City, he, along with the Foreign Ministers of the United States, Canada and all the Latin American nations, with the exception of Argentina, signed the Act of Chapultepec, which two years later led to the signing of the TIAR, ratified as the 1947 Rio Treaty after its signature by all the above mentioned signataries at the-then Brazilian capital. Then, on June 25, 1945, in San Francisco, CA; and still as Foreign Minister, he signed the United Nations Charter on behalf of Nicaragua.
