Set in a fictional town, Romalia, when German-occupied Italy intensifies the conflict between German and Allied forces during World War II. The tragedy of the twin daughters of a German high general begins when Giulia, a young girl who loves photography, is down by the lake near her home to take some photographs. She fine-tunes her camera until she sees a body in the water and rushes to help. Unfortunately, the desecrated corpse of the woman she tried to save is her deaf twin sister, Martha. Giulia must alone deal with the memory lapses condition due to the trauma of losing Martha. She seeks to find the truth behind her twin sister’s murder while struggling with blurred lines between reality and traumatized delusions, which link to the mysterious folklore of a malicious spirit of the White lady whose lover murders and hangs her at the same lake where Martha dies.[3]
The game is a walking simulator in which the player progresses through experiences in the story. It is narrative-driven; there are no enemies to defeat or experience points to gain. Horror elements, supernatural elements, gore, and jumpscares can be expected throughout the game. Martha Is Dead receives mixed reviews on its handling of mental illness as it touches on subjects including abuse, violence, trauma, manipulation, and dissociative identity disorder.
Gameplay
Martha Is Dead is a first-person psychological thriller video game. The game is a walking simulator[4] in which the user advances through the story's experiences. It is a story-driven game with no foes to defeat or experience points to earn. Expect horror, supernatural aspects, gore, and jump scares during the game.
The players take on the role of Giulia, Martha's twin sister. The character enjoys photography. Giulia's 1940 Rolleicord camera, primarily used during games, is the key plot device. Giulia uses this camera to photograph key narrative elements that would gradually reveal the story.[5] The game utilizes the entire map to tell a powerful story and provides numerous gameplay possibilities to become more acquainted with that era. As the player progresses, new tasks are given to accomplish, many of which are marked in the quest section.
Throughout the game, Giulia is afflicted by memories of Martha and supernatural visions that blur the lines between reality and hallucination. She is emotionally vulnerable and often fearful, but she also shows resilience and determination as she tries to uncover the truth about what happened to her sister. As the player progresses through the game, they will learn more about Giulia's past, her relationships with other characters, and the traumatic events that have led up to Martha's death. Giulia's character development and emotional journey are central to the game's plot and help to create a gripping and immersive horror experience. The player must navigate uncanny and unsettling environments, including a dark forest, abandoned villages, and underground tunnels. Along the way, they will encounter various supernatural phenomena, including ghostly visions, mysterious apparitions, and unsettling sounds.
The player will make many decisions and interactions with the environment and various characters, as well as the clues and puzzles scattered throughout the game. The player must solve puzzles and complete tasks to progress, uncovering the truth behind Martha's disappearance and the dark secrets beneath the surface of their idyllic hometown. The game features a haunting and atmospheric soundtrack, adding to the dread and unease.[6] At the same time, the stunning visuals[7] bring the Italian countryside to life in vivid detail. The game is a gripping and emotionally charged journey through the darkest corners of the human psyche, as the player must confront their fears and inner demons to uncover the truth and put the past to rest.[8][9]
Plot
In a fictitious hamlet in Tuscany during the late years of World War II, twin sisters Martha and Giulia spend their childhood at their nanny's home. Martha has been deaf since birth, and their mother, Irene, blames Giulia for inflicting blunt trauma on her sister while she was still in the womb. The tale of the White Lady has accompanied Giulia since childhood, as her nanny used to tell the story every night.[10] Giulia has always been oddly fascinated by the tale of the White Lady, a vengeful spirit of a lady whose boyfriend murders her by jealousy.
Giulia asks Martha to accompany her to a lake in the woods near their mansion to snap some photographs one day. Nevertheless, Martha never shows up, and Giulia has to take photographs alone. Giulia discovers her twin sister's corpse in the lake while adjusting her camera. Her parents find Giulia when she discovers the body, and her mother misidentifies her as Martha, leading Giulia to adopt the role of her twin sister. Giulia's mental state deteriorates in the days following her sister's death. Due to memory lapses,[11] she struggles to recall the events of the day her sister died.
Giulia discovers the film reel she had used moments before Martha's tragedy at the lake and finds something suspicious about her sister's death—she rows to the island where the White Lady was hanged in her childhood's folklore. After communicating with the spirit using tarot cards, Giulia receives the key to her sister's trinket box and awakens in her bathtub at the mansion.
Giulia discovers Martha's letter stating that she pretended to be deaf after Irene abused her as a child. She confesses that she felt terrible about their mother's favoritism for her and loathing for Giulia. Martha also admits that she is the one to be pregnant—she lied to their mother that Giulia is pregnant with Lapo's child. This man is a member of Italian rebel fighters against the German invasion. Martha plans to impersonate Giulia and let Giulia become the victim of her mother's fury. Giulia feels betrayed after learning the truth and decides to reveal her true identity to her mother by playing piano at Martha's funeral, which shocks the whole family.
Giulia heads to her family's mausoleums to investigate if Martha is pregnant. Giulia realizes Martha is pregnant when she discovers a deformed, two-headed fetus in Martha's body. After Giulia gets home, her mother arranges with the asylum to take her away as her mother suspects Giulia is delusional and would be dangerous for other people around her. Before developing the film reel she takes from the burial, Giulia fights with her mother for the key to her childhood bedroom and unintendedly shoots her. Suddenly, a bomb fell nearby the mansion and cut off the electricity. Giulia finds her way to the bedroom. She performs her puppet show, implying that she dismembers and buries her mother's body under a bridge in the woods, but she rejects the reality of her actions. After the electricity power is restored, Giulia develops the reel and learns that she was the one who killed Martha. She is ambushed by Italian resistance soldiers and tortured along with her murdered father, but Giulia survives. She tricks her mind after unbearable trauma happens to her and her family by creating Martha's death as her coping mechanism.
However, that is not the worst part of Giulia's delusion. Now alone, Giulia returns to the darkroom and plays her mother's confession, revealing that Martha does not exist as Giulia's twin sister. Instead, Giulia is an alter ego of Martha. She plays her puppet theater once more, walking through her rough upbringing. Mother's abusive parenting divides Martha's personality: the quiet and kind Martha and the annoying and obnoxious Giulia.
Presently, Giulia contacts the village priest, who convinces her to go to church, where the psychiatric hospital staff finally takes her. Giulia hurts herself at the shelter, often masturbating to the point of physical injury. In her head, Giulia talks about herself with her alter ego, questioning which events are actual or imaginary. At the end of the story, Giulia says she recovered and could put past events behind her.[12][13]
Characters
Martha
She is one of the twin sisters who dies at the beginning of the game. Although she is deceased, her presence throughout the gameplay is through visions, memories, and paranormal occurrences. The player will learn more about Martha's past, her interactions with other individuals, and the horrific events that lead to her death. Martha is a caring and compassionate sister who adores her family, particularly her twin sister Giulia. Her death dramatically affects the other characters in the game, particularly Giulia, who struggles to cope with her sister's loss.[14]
Giulia
She is Martha's twin sister and the game's protagonist. The player takes on the role of Giulia. Her role in the game is to uncover the truth behind her sister's death and deal with the emotional trauma that follows it. The game follows Giulia as she travels through bizarre and scary locations, meeting mysterious phenomena and interacting with various characters. When Giulia discovers her sister's body and her parents find her, her mother misidentifies Giulia as Martha, leading her to adopt her twin sister's identity. As the player takes on the role of Giulia, they must help her solve puzzles and complete tasks to progress through the game. Giulia's emotional journey and character development are central to the game's plot, and the player's interactions with the environment and characters drive the story forward. Giulia is also critical in the game's exploration of themes such as trauma, grief, and guilt. The player is encouraged to empathize with Giulia and experience the game's events through her eyes, creating an immersive and emotionally charged horror experience.
The father
Erich is the name of the twin's father. He serves as a general in the German army. He is a strict and overbearing figure who is often absent from the family's lives due to his involvement in the war effort. The player learns more about Erich's past and relationships with Martha, Giulia, and his wife throughout the game. He is depicted as a complex and flawed character with a troubled history contributing to the family's situation. His role in the game adds to the sense of mystery and uneasiness as the player must navigate his secrets and his impact on the family. He is a source of tension and conflict for the other characters, particularly Giulia, who must deal with the emotional fallout of her relationship with him. His character plays an essential role in the game's plot and themes, helping to explore issues such as family trauma, wartime experiences, and the psychological impact of loss and grief.
The mother
Irene is the mother of the twin who blames Giulia for inflicting blunt force on her sister while she is still in the womb and causing Martha to become deaf. Irene is an abusive mother who never shows affirmations to Giulia and is deeply affected by the loss of her daughter Martha. Her relationship with her surviving daughter, Giulia, is integral to the game's story. Throughout the game, the player learns more about the mother's past and relationships with the other characters. She is depicted as abusive, strict, and superstitious in the family's life but also as someone struggling to cope with the trauma of her favorite daughter's death. Her role in the game is to help the player understand the impact of Martha's death on the family.
The nanny
She is a woman who works for Martha and Giulia's family. During the summer of 1929, Giulia was sent off to stay with the nanny. The nanny used to tell the Tale of The White Lady to Giulia every day before going to bed, significantly impacting the game's storyline. The White Lady symbolizes many different cultures, particularly German culture. Folklore in Italy, where Martha Is Dead is located, claims she was a drowning girl murdered in a jealous rage by her boyfriend. Her only comfort is to drag a young lady into the water to suffer the same fate.
The White Lady
The White Lady symbolizes the game's trauma, grief, and supernatural themes. Her story, which the nanny tells to Giulia, serves as a metaphor for the trauma and loss that the family is experiencing. As the game progresses, the White Lady becomes a recurring figure, and her appearances become more frequent and significant. In folklore, the White Lady is a lovely young lady who visits the little island in the center of the lake one day. She is waiting for her love. When her beloved comes, he kills her in a jealous rage, claiming he loves her too much. When the man confesses to his crime, The soldier punishes the man by hanging him from the old tree where he and his girl used to meet. The villagers look everywhere, but the young Lady's body strangely disappears. Since then, the girl's ghost, known as the White Lady, wanders in quest of a way out of her unending torment. Only the lives of young girls like her can provide the Lady with a moment of calm and relaxation, which is why she kills them by drowning them in the lake. She pursues new victims to continue the cycle for her vengeance.[15]
Lapo
He is an Italian boy who is a member of Italian rebel fighters against the invasion of Germany. At the beginning of the game, he is revealed to be Giulia's secret boyfriend due to their controversial relationship.
The detective
He is a police officer investigating Martha's death. He appears several times throughout the game to ask questions and gather information.
Development
Origins
The game's development began in 2018 by Italian studio, LKA, using Unreal Engine 4. Wired Productions published it following the release of LKA's previous game, "The Town of Light." According to the game's creative director, Luca Dalco, "Martha Is Dead" 's developers drew inspiration from real-world events, including World War II and the horrific massacre at the Ardeatine Caves in Italy. They also drew inspiration from Italian folklore and legends, including the story of the "Bella Donna," a mysterious woman who is said to haunt the countryside.[16] The developers aimed to create a horror game exploring trauma and grief's psychological impact. Actual events and locations inspired the game's story and characters in Tuscany, Italy, in 1944, during the final days of World War II. They portrayed the actual historical events where there was a conflict on the territory where the advance of the allies from Southern Italy created a guerrilla line with the Nazi forces that were retreating towards Germany. The game's narrative focuses on the mysterious death of a young girl named Martha and her death's impact on her family and the surrounding community. Its themes include grief, loss, and the psychological toll of war.[17][18]
LKA, under Wired Productions, is based in Florence, Italy. The team is composed of several members who contributed to the creation of "Martha Is Dead," including Luca Dalco (Creative Director), Fabio Di Luzio (Art Director), Lorenzo Nocchi (3D Artist), Elena Bartolomei (2D Artist), Lorenzo Conticelli (Lead Environmental artist / Programmer), Federico Tolin (Sound Designer), Andrea Franchi (Producer) and many more.
Luca Dalco also mentioned that the setting is one element that differentiates "Martha Is Dead" from other similar psychological horror game productions. The development team conducted extensive research into World War II-era Italy to create an authentic sense of time and place, including interviews with local historians and visits to real historical sites. They aimed to reproduce the same environments in addition to psycho-technical attention.
The team also worked with voice actors to create an original Italian-language soundtrack for the game. The initial intention of the game is to draw on various historical, cultural, and personal influences to create a haunting and emotionally charged experience for players. The game's origins reflect the development team's commitment to creating a rich, immersive world that draws on real-world events and occasions.[19]
The Town of Light and Martha Is Dead
Martha Is Dead and The Town of Light are two different video games developed by the same game development team, LKA. While "Martha Is Dead" is a psychological horror game set in Tuscany, Italy, during World War II. The game tells the story of a family torn apart by tragedy and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of one of the daughters, Martha. The game features a mix of narrative-driven exploration, puzzle-solving, and survival horror gameplay mechanics. On the other hand, "The Town of Light" is a first-person adventure game in a dark and mysterious world. The game strongly focuses on investigation and discovery as players navigate through interconnected environments, solving puzzles and uncovering hidden secrets.
The Town of Light was released for PC on February 26, 2016, and for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on June 6, 2017. In the game, players take on the role of a young girl named Renée, who wakes up in a dark and mysterious world. The game strongly emphasizes exploration and discovery, with an open-world design encouraging players to explore at their own pace. The world of "The Town of Light" is filled with strange creatures and supernatural elements, creating a creepy and otherworldly atmosphere. The game's puzzles are designed to challenge players' critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with various types of puzzles to solve. As players progress through the game, they uncover clues and piece together the story of Renée's journey through the strange and mysterious world.[20][21]
Both games tell the story of a girl whom the player gets to live the experiences of these girls who live in very different situations, in war and asylum. They both share the same environment of the Tuscany game world and the same historical period at the end of World War II in the 40s. The story of Renée is more or less parallel to the storyline of Giulia and Martha. "The Town of Light" pays great attention to the history of the asylum institution, and the protagonist Renée represents the fragile humanity of those who saw their lives get broken in the asylum. "Martha Is Dead" is free and maintains the same level of attention in the protagonist's psychology. At the same time, the setting and the storyline are more personal and do not reflect a historical phenomenon like The Town of Light. Instead, it focuses more on subjective issues of a person's story.[22][23]
Graphics
The game's graphics are stunning and highly detailed, focusing on creating a realistic and immersive environment for the player. The game uses a combination of photogrammetry and traditional 3D modelling techniques to develop a sense of authenticity and realism in the game's settings. The realist and historical-based 3D assets or objects of the Italian past of the 40s were created delicately by the 3D artist team led by Lorenzo Nocchi.
The highly detailed and realistic game features stunning environments and life-like character models. The game's graphics are designed to create a sense of immersion and convey horror and unease. The game features a variety of settings, including the family's estate, the surrounding countryside, and various World War II-era locations. Each of these settings is highly detailed and meticulously crafted, with a high level of attention paid to textures, lighting, and environmental effects.
The character models in the game are also highly detailed, with lifelike facial expressions and animations that help to convey a sense of emotion and realism. The game features a range of characters, including family members, friends, and supernatural entities, and each character is uniquely designed to fit within the game's dark and unsettling world. The developers focused on deepening the psychological traits of the characters.
The overall graphics are a standout feature of the game, helping to create a highly immersive and emotionally charged experience for the player. The level of detail and attention paid to the game's visuals is a testament to the skill and dedication of the development team, and helps to make "Martha Is Dead" a visually stunning and memorable game.[24][25]

Reception
Ratings and reviews
Martha Is Dead received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the excellent graphic and story aspects but criticized the mishandling of specific themes such as mental illness and the tedious narrative.
IGN gave the game a 7/10, writing "Martha is Dead as a confronting, compelling, and increasingly disorientating detour into darkness, one that made me appropriately uncomfortable at times but ultimately left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled by its inconclusive ending. It could be more satisfying in a traditional 'Whodunnit?' sense. However, as a surreal and grotesque examination of the effects of trauma, it provides an unflinching and utterly absorbing ordeal to be endured rather than enjoyed."[28]
Metacritic gave the game 73/100 with mixed or average reviews based on 31 critic reviews and a 7.3 user score of mixed or average reviews based on 66 ratings. Some more positive reviews say, "Martha is Dead meets every expectation and exceeds most of them. It is a true ghost story, perfectly designed to demand the player keep playing while making them want to stop. Its near-flawless design sets a new benchmark in the quietly, weirdly, horrible." At the same time, some criticize its predictability and story development.[29]
Steam gave the game primarily positive reviews with a 9/10, saying, "Martha is Dead seems to be an immersive, exciting, and sometimes brutal psychological thriller thanks to the use of strong images capable of upsetting more than a player."[30]
OpenCritic gave the game a 9.1/10, writing, "Martha is Dead is an actively sinister game. It is trying to upset the player. It is trying to cling to the shadowy thoughts as they sleep. It tells a genuinely tragic tale and does so with a level of commitment and detailed pace that few games are brave enough to attempt. Despite it is not a comfortable journey. Nor is it a friendly one. If Dear Esther or Everyone Has Gone To The Rapture made their audience squirm, Martha is Dead will make them abandon the living room altogether."[31]
Awards
"Martha Is Dead" has received critical acclaim and several awards since its release, including the Grand Prix for the Indie Game Award 2023, which continues Martha's award-winning year, such as Grand Prix awards received at the Italian Video Game Awards, China Joy Awards, World Trailer Awards, and NYX Awards.[32][33][34]

Impact
Martha Is Dead touches upon sensitive subjects, including the tragedy of war, abuse, and mental illness. Following the game's theme, it is meant for mature adult audiences only and contains visually disturbing imagery that examines the intricacies of the human psyche, psychological trauma, and bodily injury. Warnings and censorship are put up on the official websites and in the game for those sensitive to the subjects mentioned. These aspects are prioritized as the central theme, which may leave a lasting impact on the audience, according to critic reviews.
Tragedy of war
The dire consequences of war for the civilian population are often neglected. It has been estimated that there have been over 150 such wars since 1945, where 90% of all casualties were civilians.
Martha Is Dead is set in a fictional town in Romalia, Italy. In July 1994, Germany invaded Italy during World War II. The character's symptoms are assumed to be a result of war trauma.[49]
Child abuse
Any intentional harm or mistreatment to a child under 18 years old is considered child abuse. A traumatized child may feel guilty, ashamed, or confused. If the abuser is a parent, other relative, or family acquaintance, the child may be afraid to tell anybody about it.
Giulia, the main character, was physically assaulted by her mother with a cane and suffered blunt-force trauma to her head in her childhood. She also suffered from emotional and verbal abuse as well as neglect.
Childhood trauma
Trauma can affect children in various ways, including accidents, serious illnesses or injuries, sorrow, and natural catastrophes, to mention a few. However, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, family violence, rhetoric, community violence, caregiver substance misuse, mental illness, and imprisonment have the most pervasive and far-reaching impacts.
Giulia suffers from domestic violence and neglect with a hint of caregiver substance misuse ( her mother, Irene, is most likely addicted to Pervitin, an addiction hinted at by adult Giulia on multiple occasions), which most likely contributed to the abusive tendencies.
Dissociative identity disorder (DID)
Dissociative identity disorder (DID) was previously known as multiple personality disorder. Someone who has DID may be unsure of their identity and who they are. People may sense the presence of other personas, each with its own set of names, voices, personal histories, and demeanor.
Following Giulia's loss of memory after the abuse, she has created an alter ego named 'Martha' as her twin sister, which was the beginning of her story coming together to avoid facing reality due to extreme trauma. She also appeared to be talking to herself at times, which can be assumed to be another alter or a state of derealization.
Derealization
The narration in the game follows scenes that appear foggy and dream-like, assumed to be Giulia's hallucination in her derealization state. From the beginning to the end, the game never concludes whether what happened in the game was Giulia's reality or a complete hallucination, leaving it up to the audience's interpretation.[50]
