Matthew Alford
Matthew Alford is a British author.
Career
In 2008, Alford was awarded a doctorate in Film Studies by the University of Bath. In the following two years, he wrote articles for The Guardian[1] and New Statesman[2] and published his first book Reel Power: Hollywood Cinema and American Supremacy with Pluto Press.
Also in 2008, Alford started writing on the disappearance of screenwriter Gary Devore and co-authored a cover article on this for Fortean Times.[3] In 2014, he produced The Writer with No Hands, which premiered at Hot Docs and won the Golden Lantern at the Ammar International Popular Film Festival. Production disagreements led to the film being withdrawn and a new version issued in 2017 with Alford listed only as presenter. Alford's 2016 account had him abandon the research and claim to be an entertainer.[4][5]
In 2017, Alford co-authored National Security Cinema: The Shocking New Evidence of Government Control in Hollywood, which was published in French with new material as an illustrated hardback by Investig'Action in 2020. Reel Power was similarly published with new material by Editions Critiques in 2018 and again in 2023. National Security Cinema was partially the basis for Theaters of War, which Alford co-produced and which was distributed by Media Education Foundation in 2022.[6]
In 2023, Alford spoke in favour of Julian Assange at TEDx and the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights at the UN.[7]
