History

MeliBio was founded in 2020 by Darko Mandich, a former bee-honey industry executive and Aaron Schaller, a scientist and an amateur chef in Berkeley, California.[7][8][9][10] The company uses plant science and precision fermentation to produce vegan honey without the need for bees.[11][12][13]

MeliBio was affected by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in 2023, with up to 90% of the company's assets reportedly held at the bank.[14][15]

In April 2023, MeliBio launched its consumer facing brand Mellody in collaboration with Chef Daniel Humm from Eleven Madison Park.[16][17]
