Micheline Chevrier

Micheline Chevrier (born 1958) is a bilingual Canadian theatre director, artistic director, dramaturge, mentor and teacher in Montreal.[1]

Born in Val-d'Or, Quebec to Franco-Ontarian parents, Chevrier attended McGill University in Montreal (BA in economics) before receiving a master's degree in the University of Toronto's drama department.

Throughout her career, Chevrier has directed and taught at The National Theatre School of Canada, Concordia University, McGill University, York University, Dalhousie University and the University of Alberta, and has directed for the Shaw Festival, at the National Arts Centre, Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, Citadel Theatre, UniThéâtre, Globe Theatre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Canadian Stage, Young People's Theatre, Théâtre français de Toronto, Centaur Theatre, Geordie Theatre, Segal Centre, Imago Theatre, Théâtre New Brunswick and BeMe Productions in Barcelona and Munich.[2]

Career

In 1986, then living in Toronto, Chevrier co-created the Writer's Workshop Theatre, which promoted the work of lesser-known women playwrights. In 1990, she became the Associate Artistic Director at Theatre New Brunswick in Fredricton,[3] before taking on the role of Associate Dramaturge at Playwright's Workshop Montreal in 1992.[4]

Chevrier became artistic director of the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa, Ontario in 1995, programming four seasons that saw increased audience subscriptions.[5] In 2007, as the co-director of Production Program at the National Theatre School of Canada, she led a renewal of the program's mandate and philosophy.

First joining Imago Theatre in 2011 as an associate director, Chevrier became its Artistic and executive director in 2013. Under Chevrier's leadership, Imago officially became a feminist and artist-run theatre company. Its work examined questions about human nature, climate change, politics, power dynamics, and the treatment of women and marginalized groups in our society.[6]
