Early life and education

A Malay Singaporean of Arab descent,[3] Mohammed Abdullah Alhabshee was born in Singapore during British colonial rule.

Mohammed graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. It was also where he first met Halimah Yacob.[2][4]

Personal life

Mohammed married Halimah Yacob in 1980, two years after meeting her at the National University of Singapore.[4] They both own a HDB duplex flat in Yishun, consisting of one 5-room flat and one 4-room flat joined together by demolishing the median wall.[5] They have five children together.

He is currently a retired businessman.[6]

Spouse of the President of Singapore

After his wife Halimah Yacob, had won the 2017 presidential election by an uncontested walkover and sworn into office on 14 September 2017, Mohammed took up the protocol role as the spouse of the president of Singapore.[7][8]

During Halimah's early presidency, the couple were still living in their HDB duplex flat at Yishun after Halimah had stated that she would not be moving out of her flat during her term in office.[9]

On 2 October 2017, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that they would be moving out of the public housing apartment, due to security threats identified by security agencies from being the head of state.[10][11]
