This small neighbourhood was originally the suburban community of Archville that was incorporated as the village of Ottawa East in 1888.[5] In 1907 it was amalgamated with the growing community of Ottawa.[6] Running through the centre of the neighbourhood is Main Street, which was the central road of Archville, but which is not particularly central to modern Ottawa. The neighbourhood is home to Saint Paul University, Lady Evelyn Alternative School, Au Coeur d'Ottawa elementary school, the central campus of St. Nicholas Adult High School, and Immaculata High School.[7][8][9][10][11]
The centre of the neighbourhood is home to Greystone Village, a housing development that has been met with some objection by neighbourhood residents.[12][13] The southern part of the neighbourhood is sometimes referred to as Rideau Gardens.[2]
The Cuban embassy is located in the neighbourhood, along Main Street.[14]
