Language features
This language uses negation bare'e, characterized by a central dialect influenced by Parigi dialect,[lower-alpha 1] and also for "losing" many of Pamona's words and expressions as spoken in the hinterlands. A linguist from Netherlands, Nicolaus Adriani, stated that:
The Pantai Bare'e dialect is principally the language of Pamona people which has become Muslim (Poso Pesisir people), and these people have generally adopted habits that have forced the use of alternative terms out of memory. Because all their minds are occupied with petty trade, their conversation is also narrower in focus and less interesting compared to those who live in the interior; Their language is more drab than inland Bare'e and their style is far less lively and colorful. The farther east, the thicker this dialect exhibits these characters. The habit is most pronounced in the Tojo area, where this dialect is very dominant.[3]
Adriani then said that the Pamona people themselves did not distinguish between these two dialects, just saying that people in the interior understand -in an unknown way- that their speech is different from the Pamona people who live on the coast. Adriani refers to the coastal dialect as Strand-Bare'e, which Sneddon (1983) refers to as the "Pamona Beach Dialect". Kennedy (1935), referred to this dialect as the "Poso-Tojo dialect" if indeed this variety deserves the status of being in dialect.[4]
Notes
- Parigi is a dialect in Kaili language which is generally spoken along the coast of Tomini Bay in the west of the Pamona area.
