Qi Tai (simplified Chinese: 齐泰; traditional Chinese: 齊泰) (died 1402) was a Ming dynasty official was advisor to the Jianwen Emperor. He was executed by the Yongle Emperor at the conclusion of the Jingnan campaign.[1]

Biography

Qi Tai was born Qi De (齐德) and was given the name Qi Tai by Zhu Yuanzhang.[2] Qi was born in modern-day Nanjing, Jiangsu. Qi Tai worked as a jinshi for Hongwu[3][4] and Jianwen, and served as the director of the Ministry of Rites and the Ministry of War, and as left minister. On Zhu Yuanzhang's deathbed, Qi Tai was recruited to accept his life.[1]

After Jianwen ascended the throne, Qi was promoted to the Minister of War, and Huang Zicheng suggested seizing the land of feudal lords. As a result, Zhu Di, the prince of Yan, launched the Jingnan campaign. In the fourth year of Jianwen (1402), after Zhu Di won the throne, Zhu Di arrested and executed Qi Tai.[1]

Qi Tai died unyielding along with Huang Zicheng and Fang Xiaoru, who were also executed by Zhu Di. Qi's wife and daughter were tortured, his cousin Qi Jingzong (齐敬宗) and others were implicated and executed by Zhu, his uncles Qi Shiyong (齐时永) and Qi Yangyan (齐阳彦) were demoted to the border, his six-year-old son was even exiled and imprisoned.[5][6]

During the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Gaozong rehabilitated the ministers of Jianwen, and Qi Tai was commended as a loyal and respected minister.[1]
