Plot

For decades of using ruqyah (Islamic exorcism) to help people, Ustadz Qodrat failed to exorcise his son, Alif Al-Fatanah, possessed by a demon named As'-Su' A'la. Not only did failing to exorcise As'-Su' A'la, but Qodrat also lost Alif Al-Fatanah as As'-Su' A'la killed him. Sentenced by imprisonment prison for three years for negligence resulted in death brought Qodrat to the lowest point in his life. In prison, Qodrat was killed by As'-Su' A'la who was invited by his prolonged grieving. However, he was brought back to life after brief transit to barzakh and realized his mistakes there.

Looking for answers to his worries, Qodrat returns to the boarding school in the village where he studied. He finds the place is no longer what it used to be, with unexplained disturbances. Jihan, a local girl, was driven to madness after being possessed by an unknown demon who forced her to commit suicide. Local villagers also already run out of options since they lacked money as their crops are failing in the last three years. They later resorted to jampi (Javanese spells) to deal with the disturbances but everything they tried are not working.

Alif Amri, a local boy, is possessed by a demon, which attacked Yasmin, his mother, and Asha, his sister. Qodrat is again faced with the trauma of having to ruqyah Alif Amri, Yasmin's youngest child, whom he cannot refuse because of the similarity of his name to his late son. During the ruqyah, Qodrat learned that the demon is Khodab, As'-Su' A'la's minion. Khodab threatened Qodrat to call his master. Realizing the old foe, Qodrat has to choose between obeying his anger or re-finding his faith. Jafar took Yasmin's family after As'-Su' A'la attacked them.

During his stroll with Asha, Qodrat later learned from Jihan's father, that the boarding school had deprived the villagers' right to their land, as Jafar took away the land in the name of the boarding school for payment of his service. Jihan's father said that his family land also claimed by Jafar, resulted in him out job his farming job. Enraged, he vents his anger to Qodrat and beat him mercilessly. The beating stopped when they witnessed Tanti, Jihan's mother, committed suicide by jumping the cliff in front of them.

All seems well after Alif Amri recovered and Yasmin's family celebrated his recovery. However, the celebration stopped as Alif Amri was no longer able to recite basmala, but instead recited a jampi. Suddenly, the lights go out. Yasmin was then possessed by As'-Su' A'la. As'-Su' A'la then wreaked havoc in Yasmin's house. Asha flees her house for seeking help at the boarding school, leaving Alif Amri with the now-possessed Yasmin.

Qodrat eventually learned that is Jafar who caused the unexplained disturbances in the village from Kyai Rochim, which briefly regained his consciousness. Jafar advertently summoned various disaster and disease demons including As'-Su' A'la to gain power, wealth, and advantages from the village. Later revealed that Jafar is not an ustad, but a black kejawen dukun disguised as an ustad to live off from the village and the boarding school. Enraged with Jafar's heinous acts, Qodrat dueled Jafar, resulting in Jafar's death. After Jafar's death, Qodrat faced As'-Su' A'la. After an intense fight, As'-Su' A'la is expelled from Yasmin, only to possess Alif Amri. As'-Su' A'la's cast a spell to morph the appearance of Alif Amri into Alif Al-Fatanah to deceive Qodrat. In a soul-crushing test, Qodrat again faces the fury of As'-Su' A'la in Alif Al-Fatanah form. After breaking As'-Su' A'la's spell, Qodrat is finally able to exorcise As'-Su' A'la from Alif Amri.

Six months after the defeat of Jafar and As'-Su' A'la, Qodrat and Kyai Rochim were finally able to undo what Jafar had already done and brought back the village's prosperity. Qodrat then left the village with the old but robust motorcycle of Kyai Rochim now as his ride. Leaving the village, Qodrat sees a thunder strike from afar. Taking this as a sign, Qodrat speeds up his ride and directed his course to thunderstrike direction.

Production

The filming was done at Pengilon Hills at Gunung Kidul and Kaliurang Hills at Kaliurang, Sleman. Both located at Yogyakarta. The filming took place for 4 months.[5]

Qodrat is the first debut of Vino Bastian role in a horror film. Not only that, but this movie was also for the first time Vino Bastian played in the same film with his wife, Marsha Timothy. Coincidentally, the film was released exactly on their 10th wedding anniversary.[6]

Due to extensive Islamic religious actions and messages delivered by the film, in order to keep the messages value in line with Islam, the screenwriters deeply researched Islamic demonology and arts of ruqyah during the script development. The production team also consulted Nahdhlatul Ulama socio-religious scientist Dr. Ngatawi Al-Zastrouw and professional raqi from Indonesia Ruqya House Ustad Isman during the production. Both ustads reviewed every script and acts taken by the performers, so their acts are real and in line with both Islamic values and Javanese culture.[7]

Randy Pangalila revealed that the spell recitation used by his role, Ustad Jafar, to summon the demons was actual and original spell used to worship demons used by the real-life Javanese dukun santet (dukun which capable to deal pain or even death by curse). He said that the spell he recited is initial part of dedication to demons which supposed to summon demons for come to assist in santet act.[8][9][10] However, as the production is supervised by professional raqis (ruqyah practitioner) which understand how the Javanese santet spells work, the supervising raqis advised that some parts of spell need to be recited improperly and recited without intention to really use, so the spell does not work upon recitation.[11][12]
