In Anglo-Norman England, the name derived from the Old French rei, roi, reenforced by Middle French roy, meaning "king",[1] (cf. viceroy[2]) likewise gave rise to Roy in the Francophone world. In India, Roy is a variant of the surname Rai,[3] likewise meaning "king".[4]

It also arose independently in Scotland, an anglicisation from the Scottish Gaelic nickname ruadh, meaning "red".[3]
