State-owned SAIL signed a 50:50 joint venture with Indian Railways arm RITES to construct a wagon- manufacturing unit at Kulti near Asansol in West Bengal. The total investment for the project was estimated at ₹205 crore (equivalent to ₹391 crore or US$49 million in 2020). The proposed factory was planned to be constructed on a 12 acres plot, which belonged to IIISCO Steel Plant, now part of SAIL.[4][5]
The construction work of the plant started after the then Railway Minister and the present Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the project in October 2010. The plant commenced commercial production in December 2016.[6][7]
