The National Policy on Disaster Management 2009 requires the state governments in India to raise their own response forces for rapid disasters response.[1] As a result, the Assam Government raised the SDRF on 15 December 2011.[2]

In 2013, the SDRF was attached to the Assam Fire and Emergency Services,[3] a branch of the police department.

As of 2021, the SDRF had five companies:[4] Lakhimpur, Cachar, Guwahati, Bongaigaon and Golaghat.
