Seán is derived from the Norman-French 'Jehan'(Jean), which itself is a variant of the Biblical Hebrew name 'Yohanan'. 'Eoin' is a direct Irish variant of Yohanan. Both Seán and Eoin were anglicised as 'John' in the 19th-century English colonisation of Ireland. The Ulster variant of Seán is Séan, which was most commonly anglicised as 'Shane'.
