Jelinek competed for the University of Pennsylvania eight man crew in the seventh seat, but was also a member of the Penn water polo team.[1] At the 1924 Olympic Trials, his Penn eight rowing crew failed to defeat Yale for the Olympic berth, but Jelinek made the team in the fours while rowing for the Bachelor’s Barge Club. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1923 with a Bachelors of Architecture degree and worked as an architect in his hometown of Philadelphia.[1] In 1924 he won the bronze medal as member of the American boat in the coxed four event.[2]
