This was the longest locomotive in the Sri Lanka Railways previously. All units are still operational. On regular operation they are not used beyond Polgahawela on the main line, and are not used on the hill country section. They used to travel on the full main line regularly until the previous decade.
They are painted in a livery of dark blue, light blue, silver with yellow striping; although No. 752 Point Pedro was painted in a special ICE (Intercity Express) livery.

special note = class m4 756 [ laxapana ] unexpectedly visited kandy after 13 years [ the last journey was on 2007 which the class m4 756 hauled a oil train to kandy ] . this visit was unscheduled. the siyane kumari train had no locomotive to haul the train from colombo to kandy, so the maradana diesel/electric shed decided to use the same locomotuve to pull the kandy stretch . although it did not had sanbox or air brakes , it still managed to climb the hills and arrive at the kandy railway station on 2023/05/12. on 2023 / 05 / 13 sunday , the class m4 756 left the kandy station with a class m5c locomotive pulling from the front with the siyane kumari train
