Stephen Stahl
Dr. Stephen Stahl, MD, PhD, is an accomplished author and Professor of Psychiatry who specializes in psychopharmacology. He currently holds the position of Professor at the University of California, San Diego and at the University of California Riverside and serves as an Honorary Fellow in the psychiatry department at the University of Cambridge.[1] In addition, he is the chairman of Neuroscience Education Institute (NEI) and Arbor Scientia Group. Dr. Stahl also serves as an Editor-in-chief of CNS Spectrums. He has authored over 600 articles and chapters, with an H-index of 72, and has given more than 2,000 scientific presentations and abstracts. Dr. Stahl is an internationally renowned clinician, researcher, and teacher in psychiatry with subspecialty expertise in psychopharmacology. Dr. Stahl has also published a novel, Shell Shock, and a biography of Nicola Tesla.[2][3] His lectures, courses, and preceptorships based upon his textbooks have taken him to dozens of countries on six continents. His books have sold over a million copies, and his lectures and scientific presentations have been distributed in many different languages to hundreds of thousands of professionals.[4]

Education and early career
Stephen M. Stahl is a medical professional who holds undergraduate and medical degrees from North-western University in Chicago, where he was a member of the Honors Program in Medical Education. He also holds a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology and physiology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Stahl has received training in three different medical specialties, namely internal medicine at the University of Chicago, neurology at the University of California in San Francisco, and psychiatry at Stanford University. He is board certified in psychiatry.[5][6]
Career
Dr. Stahl has conducted numerous research projects during his career, which have been awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), and the pharmaceutical industry. He is dedicated to producing and disseminating educational information about diseases and their treatments in psychiatry and neurology, which is a major area of his interest. He conducted research on various topics such as the effectiveness of St John's wort in major depression through a randomized controlled trial, a review of the current nomenclature for psychotropic agents, and an introduction to the Neuroscience-based Nomenclature.[7] Additionally, his team researched on the evolution of GABA A receptor modulators as hypnotics in their search for perfect sleep.[8]
Dr. Stahl has held faculty positions at several prestigious universities, including Stanford University, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), the Institute of Psychiatry London, and the Institute of Neurology London. He is currently a Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the University of California Riverside, as well as an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego and at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University at Syracuse.[9][10] He is also an Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Dr. Stahl is the Director of psychopharmacology services and academic programs for the California Department of State Hospital System, which has five facilities and serves 6500 patients. He plays a leadership role in addressing violence and the decriminalization of the seriously mentally ill. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of Clinical Neurosciences at the Merck Neuroscience Research Center in the UK for several years.[11]

Dr. Stahl is serving as an editorial board member of several international reputed journals including International Review of Psychiatry, Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, Neuropsychopharmacology, Journal of Psychotic Disorders, Clinical Neuropsychiatry, Psychiatry/Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience, Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, Neuropsychiatry, Frontiers in Psychopharmacology. He has written over 60 textbooks and edited 15 others, including the best-selling and award-winning textbook, Stahl’s Essential Psychopharmacology, now in its fifth edition. He has also served on numerous medical and scientific advisory boards for various organizations, including the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology and medical information industry, and non-profit and public service organizations.

Legacy
In 2015, Northwestern University, his alma mater, honored him by naming their annual award for the best medical student going into psychiatry the Stephen Stahl award.
