Sudipto Sen

Sudipto Sen is an Indian film director. Sen made his debut as a documentary film maker in 1997 with the film "The Other Wealth". He later worked as a producer at World Bank from 1998 to 2002. In 2006 he directed his first feature film The Last Monk that brought him recognition.[1] Sen's 2023 film The Kerala Story, despite being controversial, turned out to be one of the highest grossing Hindi films of 2023.[2]

Early life and education

Sudipto Sen was born in a Sen Brahmin family, Jalpaiguri,West Bengal, in 1972.

He did his schooling at BT Road in Kolkata, and in Jalpaiguri Zilla School, west Bengal. He later graduated with a Bachelor's degree in physics, and a master's degree in applied psychology.[1]

Career

Sudipto Sen started his film career in 1997 with his directorial debut documentary film "The Other Wealth". He later worked as a producer from 1998 to 2002 at the World Bank. In 2006, he directed his first English-language film, "The Last Monk", which brought him industry recognition.[1]

In 2007, Sen directed the short film "Akhnoor" that had no dialogue, and dealt with the issue of militancy and terrorism in the city of Akhnoor in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.[3][4] He also worked as an ad film maker for over 50 commercials.[5] Sen directed the feature film "Lucknow Times" in 2015,[6] and "Aasma" in 2018 that dealt with the issue of Islamic terrorism.[7]

Sen's 2021 documentary film "In The Name of Love — Melancholy of God’s Own Country" covered the issue of Indian women converting to Islam and leaving to areas under the influence of ISIS and Taliban.[8] Sen was physically assaulted at JNU during a screening of this film, he defended himself saying that he comes from a communist family and is not a member of Sangh Parivar, and made the film to bust the theory of Love Jihad.[1][9] Sen's 2023 feature film "The Kerala Story" that revolves around similar issues turned out to be one of the highest grossing Hindi films of 2023.[2][10]

For his 2022 documentary film "Gurujana", which was made as a tribute to the 15th–16th century Assamese polymath Srimanta Sankardev, he received special mention in a press release from the Indian Government's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.[11][12] In 2022, Sen officiated as the only Indian jury member among the International Jury at the 53rd International Film Festival of India.[13][14]
