The Welder takes the very prevalent issue of racism and explores the true horror that is racial division and even offers a solution, albeit a heinous one. The film also explores the issue of PTSD and mental illness; and shows what can happen when someone is taken to the brink of their sanity.
Cast
Production
The Welder was shot on location in Homestead, Florida.[4] Filmed over the course of 9 days in the scorching summer of the Florida Everglades on less than a shoestring budget, Director/Co-Writer David Liz and Co-writer Manny Delgadillo brought life to The Welder overcoming incredible obstacles; Including having their gear stolen 2 days before the shoot, their main actor being arrested one day before the shoot, the production vehicle breaking down on the first day of production, and so many other monkey wrenches thrown into the machine. When you are filming 16 hour days, in 100% humidity, with a serious lack of funds you really have to want to make a movie, The Welder is testament to the true indie filmmaking spirit.
Release and reception
Loron Hays of Reel Reviews gave the film a positive review, writing that, "Both shocking and subtle in its use of horror extremes, The Welder is one hell of a journey into uncharted TERROR-tories."
Charlie Cargile of Pop horror loved the film saying, "What really works for The Welder is the isolated setting and the small cast of characters. Eliza and Roe are onscreen for the majority of the 1 hour and 25 minute run time and we, as an audience, grow to care for them. We want them to survive the situation they are in because they are good, likable people. The owner of the ranch, Doctor William Godwin, is definitely a little off, but you really don’t know how much he is off until the film’s final act. The cast does an excellent job bringing these characters to life. I was highly impressed with Camila Rodriguez. Her character goes through so much over the course of The Welder and she absolutely kills it. Camila Rodriguez deserves to be indie horror’s newest Scream Queen. She should be headlining movies."
Surgeons of Horror reviewed the film and said, "There are some suitably scarring moments that are brought to screen with the image of body mutilation and psychological tension brought to the fore. The dialogue is often delivered naturally between the two leads, Rodriguez and Dunkley with great chemistry. Rodriguez in particular is great to watch drifting through the various stages of anxiety and fear."
Mack Veltman of 1428 Elm enjoyed the film, stating, "The Welder features a small cast and writers Liz and Delgadillo give each character plenty of screen time for character development, so they all felt well-fleshed out...I also like some of the ways the film subverted typical storytelling tropes... The Welder also boasts some truly stunning cinematography, especially the establishing shots of the ranch which hammer down (or weld-together, not sure about that pun though) the idea that Eliza and Roe are on their own."
