Vanessa Van Edwards
Vanessa Van Edwards is a behavioral investigator with Science of People[1][2] and author of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People (2017).[3][4] She is also a body language trainer specializing in science-based people skills.[5][6][7] She runs Science of People, a human behavior research lab in Portland, Oregon where she studies charisma, influence and power body language.[8][9][10]

Personal life
Vanessa Van Petten was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.[11][7] She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.[12][13][14]
Career
Van Edwards is lead investigator at her human behavior research lab, the Science of People.[12] She conducts original research experiments on popular psychology and communication.[15][16]
Van Edwards writes monthly columns for Entrepreneur Magazine[17] and The Huffington Post.[18] She is also a monthly guest on morning news show, AM Northwest.[19] She has written for CNN,[20] TIME,[21] Forbes,[22] and Fast Company.[23]
Van Edwards teaches online courses about body language, facial expression, nonverbal communication and lie detection,[24][25][26] all grounded in scientific research.[12] She has also created/instructed some LinkedIn Learning courses, most of which are on first impressions and how to make conversations more meaningful and better.
Van Edwards has conducted a set of experiments on TED talks[27][28] and presented her research at SXSW in March 2015.[29] Her lab conducted research on the TV show Shark Tank[15] and analyzed hand gestures in presidential inaugural addresses.[20]
Van Edwards is the author of the books Human Lie Detection and Body Language 101,[30] Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People,[31][32] and Do I Get My Allowance Before or After I'm Grounded with Plume[33] under her maiden name, Vanessa Van Petten. Her latest book Cues was released in March 2022.[34]
