2022 Sri Lankan presidential election

Presidential elections will be held in Sri Lanka on 20 July 2022. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the country on 13 July 2022 instead of resigning as he promised.[1][2] Ranil Wickremesinghe won the election and will serve a term of 2 years.[3]

  • Sajith Premadasa, incumbent Leader of the Opposition (2020–present), Member of Parliament from Colombo Electoral District (2020–present) initially declared to run for presidency.[6] On 19 July, the day of selecting nominees, he withdrew his candidacy and announced that he and his party decided to support Dullas Alahapperuma.[7]
