Melissa Cristina Márquez

Melissa Cristina Márquez is a Puerto Rican marine biologist.[1] She is a shark scientist.[1]She focuses her studies on Chondrichthyan animals.[1] She researches why they choose specific habitats.[1] She is the founder of an informative shark enterprise called, Fins United Initiative.[2] Márquez has hosted her own Spanish speaking podcast called ConCiencia Azul.[3] She interviews other scientists about various ocean facts.[3] Márquez also uses her free time to include her shark knowledge to Forbes Science.[2][4] Márquez is committed to making sure that all STEM workplaces are inclusive and equally diverse.[3]

Early life

Melissa Cristina Márquez was born in Puerto Rico, but she grew up in Mexico.[5] As a child, Márquez made her very first memories on the beach.[3] She would analyze tidal waters, and gather seashells while watching groups of fish.[3] Márquez grew up watching the Discovery Channel segments about sharks.[6]

Family

Márquez describes her family as very supportive.[7] Her mother had a career as a biology educator and biochemical engineer.[3]

Education:

Márquez has received her undergraduate degree at the New College of Florida.[8] She has gotten a masters degree from Victoria University of Wellington.[8] Márquez also has a PhD from Curtin University.[4]

Achievements

Márquez has given a TEDx talk on “Sharks & Female Scientists: More Alike Than You Think”.[3] She works with Divya Nawale and other members of the advisory board of Women in Ocean Science.[9]
