Thanu Yakupitiyage
Thanushka Yakupitiyage is a queer, Sinhalese Sri Lankan born activist, cultural organizer and DJ.[1] [2] She runs the US communication work at 350.org.[2] Yakupitiyage works as a DJ at iBomba where she has performed in North and South America.[1] She fights for immigrant rights and climate justice. [1]
Early life
Yakupitiyage was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Thailand.[1] She was born to educators, her mother being a teacher and father, a professor.[3] Yakupitiyage moved to Massachusetts to attend Hampshire College when she was 18 years old.[3] She then moved to New York after graduating.[3]
Career
Yakupitiyage rallies for immigrant rights.[3] She is an immigrant herself and helps other immigrants from deportation and detention.[2] She has done many movements such as organizing the Muslim Ban protest.[2] Yakupitiyage also fights for climate justice.[2] She feels that climate issues affect immigrants because it makes migrating harder.[2]
Yakupitiyage DJs by the name Ushka.[1] She DJs and runs the QTPOC iBomba.[2] She uses her mixes to tell the stories of immigrants, queer and people of color.[1]
