The film's development began in 2014 when Sony Pictures acquired the rights, but it went through various changes in writers, directors, and casting. Eventually, Warner Bros. Pictures took over the project in 2018, with Margot Robbie attached as the star and producer. Greta Gerwig was confirmed as the director and co-writer with Noah Baumbach in 2021. The filming took place at Warner Bros. Studios in England from March to July 2022.

Barbie is set to be released in the United States on July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
