Starmer was the Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union in Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet. He was Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013.[1]

In January 2020, Starmer announced his candidacy for Labour Leader in the 2020 election.[2] On 4 April 2020, Starmer was elected as leader of the Labour Party and thus Leader of the Opposition.[3] He was elected in the first round of voting with 275,780 votes (56.2%).[4]

In May 2022, the British police announced the opening of an investigation into an alleged breach of the rules of sanitary confinement in force in 2021 in the United Kingdom.[5]

Starmer is an atheist[6] but has said that he "does believe in faith" and its power to bring people together. His wife is Jewish,[7] and his children are brought up in Jewish faith.
