L’Malouma Said

L’Malouma Said (Arabic: معلومة سعيد بنت بلال; born 1972) is a politician and activist from Mauritania. In 2018, she received the International Women of Courage Award from the U.S Department of State.[1][2]

Life

L’Malouma Said was born a slave in Boutilmitt, Mauritania. She was a leader in the El Hor movement (Movement for the liberation of Haratines) in Mauritania. She helped to start the Mauritanian anti-slavery organization S.O.S. Esclaves. She is married to Boubacar Messaoud, the current leader of S.O.S. Esclaves.[3][4]

She was elected to the National Assembly of the Parliament of Mauritania in 2006 and 2013. [1][5]
