Nishinoomote (西之表市, Nishino'omote-shi[1]) is a Japanese city in Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Tanegashima.

History

The city was established on 1 October 1958.

Timeline

  • 1543 (Tenbun 12, 25th day of the 8th month): Portuguese ship landed at Tanegashima bringing the first gun into Japan.[2] Fernão Mendes Pinto is believed to be the first European to set foot on Japan.
  • 1993 (Heisei 5): Nishinoomote developed a twin town link with Vila do Bispo, Portugal.[3]
